Guardians avoid arb, lock up Kwan and Thomas for 2025
CLEVELAND -- With Steven Kwan and Lane Thomas now locked up for the 2025 season, the Guardians have officially avoided arbitration with all of their eligible players.
Sources told MLB.com that Thomas and the Guardians agreed to a one-year, $7.825 million deal on Thursday. Kwan and Cleveland then agreed to a one-year, $4.175 million contract. The Guardians had three other arbitration-eligible players --Triston McKenzie, Sam Hentges and Ben Lively -- all of whom agreed to terms in November.
Kwan has proven to be one of the best leadoff hitters in the game. He flirted with a .400 batting average into June last season and has won a Gold Glove in each season he’s been in the Majors.
Acquired at the Trade Deadline, Thomas is capable of handling center field and also can play in the corners. Not only does he have the ability to get on base and swipe bases, he provides a much-needed power threat that this team needs. He put that on full display during the postseason, when he smacked a grand slam against Tarik Skubal in Game 5 of the ALDS.
Thursday was the deadline for teams to exchange figures with arbitration-eligible players, which meant some sort of a deal had to be done if neither side had any interest in the possibility of going to arbitration next month.
