Postponements due to inclement weather usually don’t include a positive outcome. But Friday night’s Game 4 postponement, pushing the ALCS back a day, made this weekend in the rock and roll capital of the world that much more jam-packed, with the Guardians' push for their seventh World Series appearance at the forefront.
Sunday features a wall-to-wall doubleheader while giving Cleveland die-hards a chance to catch both. The 3-2 Browns of the NFL take on the 4-1 Ravens at Huntington Bank Field at 1 p.m. ET in a battle for first place in the AFC North. Just over a mile away, the Guardians and Rays will face off for Game 5 at Progressive Field at 5 p.m. It’s a tight but not impossible turn for fans in The Forest City to watch both of their teams battle.
Cleveland’s baseball franchise has played in the World Series at the same time that the Browns held a record of .500 or better just once, in 1948, when Cleveland beat the Boston Braves, and the Browns had a 6-0 record.
This weekend started hot Saturday afternoon outside of Ohio, in Bloomington, Ind. The Ohio State Buckeyes’ football team took on the defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers, who entered with a 22-game winning streak. Head coach Ryan Day’s squad from just two hours south of Guardians manager Stephen Vogt’s club took down head coach Curt Cignetti and Indiana, winning 19-15 in a top-five matchup.
With a little time in between to grab dinner, fans of the Buckeyes and Guardians turned their attention to the ALCS at Progressive Field, where the Rays topped the Guardians, 7-3, to even the series, 2-2.
And how’s this for a little continuity? Guardians fans also sing their rendition of “Hang On Sloopy,” chanting “O-H-I-O,” a between-innings tradition. Same as Buckeyes fans do during their home games.
This is a weekend full of sports that certainly has Cleveland rocking.
