G-Rod's family, teammates: 'We’re extremely excited'
How excited are you to make your MLB debut and to become a big leaguer?
Between February and October, Grayson Rodriguez doesn’t allow his mind to dream about the future. So when he was posed with those types of questions in the days and weeks leading up to his MLB debut, he was too focused on the present to want to answer.
So let’s allow some of those close to Rodriguez, who is ranked the Orioles' No. 2 prospect by MLB Pipeline, to answer for him.
How excited are you for Grayson to make his MLB debut and to become a big leaguer?
Gilbert Rodriguez (Grayson's dad): “We’re extremely excited. I’m extremely excited. It’s been a lifelong dream for him. And that’s what was always motivation -- getting there. He’s worked really hard for it.”
Travis Jackson (his coach at Central Heights high school): “I think everybody in Nacogdoches [Texas] is excited about it, and at Central Heights. I’ve never had a kid of this caliber before, to go this steep. For a coach, it’s a special moment. I’m proud of him.”
Adley Rutschman: “I’m very excited to see. Because he definitely has a lot of potential.”
Drew Rom: “He’s had it pretty much locked down since Day 1 [of camp] with the stuff he’s had and all the stats he’s put in.”
DL Hall: “I know he’s going to continue to do what he’s been doing in the Minor Leagues. And like I said, he’s a lot of fun to watch. I think he’s going to help this team win a lot.”
Triple-A manager Buck Britton: “He’s young, so he’s going to get his feet wet, hopefully, this year. And Grayson’s not going to let anything stop him, I’ll tell you that.”
Here’s what else Rodriguez is going to do. He’ll give his all in his prep work. He’ll put himself in the best possible position to succeed for his first big league start day.
Then, watch out. Because it’ll be time for Gameday Grayson to show up. And after 23 years of buildup for this one moment, he’ll be more locked in for Wednesday's game than any previous one of his life.
“I think you dream about it a lot as a kid, but you’re very fortunate to be in this situation,” Rodriguez said. “So I’m pretty grateful for it. As a younger kid, this is definitely what I dreamed of.”
