White Sox place Gio González on IL
CHICAGO -- Left-handed pitcher Gio González was placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 27) with a right groin strain prior to Sunday’s series finale with the Royals. González, 34, has not pitched since Aug. 22 at the Cubs when he threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief and earned his first career win with the White Sox.
González warmed up in the bullpen Friday night and could have followed Reynaldo López after López’s second start since coming off the 10-day injured list. But González seemed to tweak something at that point, per White Sox manager Rick Renteria.
“He just said his groin was sore, so he was checked out,” Renteria said. “It must have been when he was throwing, so we'll deal with that as we continue to move forward.”
Over six games (four starts) this season, González is 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA.
After leaving Saturday’s loss in the ninth inning with soreness in the back of his left leg, third baseman Yoán Moncada was out of Sunday’s lineup.
“He's still obviously trying to play through that sore back of his leg,” Renteria said. “They're still treating it so we're going to see if we can give him a break, see if it comes down a little bit. He's been doing everything he can to push himself to be out there.
“Today was probably the best day of any, if there's ever a day, and there's never a good day for these guys to be down because you want them to be in there. So they're going to be treating him up and hopefully, maybe available for an emergency at-bat or something.”
Moncada tested positive for COVID-19 during the intake process prior to Summer Camp and has been battling leg issues almost from the season’s outset. Renteria hopes the absence doesn’t become extended for the talented switch-hitter.
“I don't know yet,” Renteria said. “We have to let him go through the whole process today, and then we'll come back to it and see where he's at. We'll know a little more tonight after he's been treated up and things like that, and then see how he's doing tomorrow.”
