Former first-round Draft pick Kyle Drabek has signed a Minor League deal with the Giants, whom ESPN reports will work the right-hander out as both a pitcher and infielder.
The 28-year-old Drabek, son of former Major League pitcher Doug Drabek, was selected 18th overall in the 2006 MLB Draft by the Phillies out of The Woodlands (Texas) High School, where he starred as both a pitcher and hitter.
Drabek hit .479 with six home runs as a high school senior, in addition to going 10-0 with a 1.18 ERA on the mound.
"At our request, Drabek is taking ground balls and giving us a look at him as an infielder [as he was in high school]," Giants general manager Bobby Evans said in a text message to ESPN. "But we're not ruling out his continuing with us from the mound."
Drabek signed with the Phillies out of high school, and he was dealt to Toronto as part of the 2009 Roy Halladay trade. He is 8-15 with a 5.26 ERA in 43 games (30 starts) in parts of seven seasons for the Blue Jays, White Sox and D-backs.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Drabek had Tommy John surgery in 2007, and he underwent a second elbow reconstruction in '12.
