Prospects Bart, Luciano among Giants cuts
Catcher Joey Bart and shortstop Marco Luciano, who are ranked the Giants’ top two prospects by MLB Pipeline, were among the 25 players who were optioned or reassigned to Minor League camp on Monday.
Minor League camp won’t officially open until April 1, so the cut players will continue to work out at Scottsdale Stadium and could still be brought up to play in Cactus League games over the next couple of weeks.
One interesting omission from the list was outfielder Heliot Ramos, who has emerged as one of the most impressive prospects this spring after going 9-for-21 (.429) with three home runs over nine exhibition games. The 21-year-old from Puerto Rico has yet to play above Double-A Richmond and isn’t viewed as a candidate for the Opening Day roster, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him debut in San Francisco at some point in 2021.
Bart finished last season as the Giants’ everyday catcher after being promoted in August, but the Giants have said that they believe the 24-year-old could benefit from more seasoning in the Minors. The return of Buster Posey and the addition of fellow veteran backstop Curt Casali will allow the Giants to start Bart at Triple-A Sacramento, where he’ll be able to log the reps he needs to further his development on both sides of the ball.
Among the more surprising cuts were left-hander Conner Menez and outfielder Jaylin Davis, both of whom saw time with the Giants over the past two seasons. Menez, 25, tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings against the D-backs in his most recent start on Sunday, but the Giants already have several rotation options ahead of him on the depth chart. Davis, 26, was slowed by knee soreness early in camp and then went 3-for-14 with eight strikeouts over his first five Cactus League games.
“I think Jaylin continues to be a work in progress at the plate,” manager Gabe Kapler said Sunday. “What we’re noticing is that Jaylin is still looking to drive pitches in the zone and make a little bit more contact.”
