Giants in the pink for Mother's Day

LOS ANGELES -- Manager Bruce Bochy called his lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers as the "Bomb Squad," a joking reference to the presence of reserves Joaquin Arias, Juan Perez and Ehire Adrianza.

But it was more like the Mom Squad.

Seven of the nine starters took their swings with pink bats in observance of Mother's Day and the league's promotion of breast cancer awareness.

Virtually every player donned some sort of pink item -- mostly wristbands, but also shoes or shoelaces. They doubtlessly shared the sentiments of infielder Adrianza, who used a pink bat and wore all of the aforementioned accessories.

"My mother helped me a lot," said Adrianza, the 24-year-old rookie who started at shortstop. "She always cares about how I am, how I'm eating, how are my clothes."

Adrianza made sure to telephone his mother, Nitza, in Venezuela on Sunday morning. Not only did he convey Mother's Day wishes, he delivered the news that he was in the lineup.

"She's happy because I told her that I'm playing," said Adrianza, adding that she planned to watch the game on television.
