Giants Arizona Fall League updates
Giants Arizona Fall League updates
October 25th, 2019
Seven Giants prospects are playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the 2019 Arizona Fall League: Outfielder Heliot Ramos (No. 2, MLB No. 50), right-handers Tristan Beck (No. 18) and Frank Rubio, outfielder Jacob Heyward, second baseman Jalen Miller, left-hander Bryce Tucker and catcher Ricardo Genoves (No. 22). Genoves joined the roster on Oct. 10 when fellow backstop Joey Bart (No. 1, MLB No. 19) was removed with a fractured right thumb, after hitting .333/.524/.767 with four home runs, a double and 10 RBIs in 10 fall games.
Here’s a day-by-day look at how San Francisco's AFL contingent is faring:
Oct. 25:Mesa 3, Scottsdale 0 Frank Rubio wrapped up his fall season by tossing his sixth consecutive scoreless outing, working a 1-2-3 sixth frame Friday against Mesa. The right-hander worked 11 frames during his time with Scottsdale, allowing two runs and walking none while striking out nine. The duo of Jalen Miller and Ricardo Genoves scuffled at the dish, striking out in five of their six combined plate appearances. Miller concluded his Fall League stint by posting multiple strikeouts in each of his final four contests, while Genoves finished 1-for-14 during his four games with the club.
Oct. 24:Surprise 10, Scottsdale 2 Heliot Ramos turned in a 1-for-4 performance for a fourth time in five games in Scottsdale’s loss to Surprise. The Giants’ No. 2 prospect, who’s batting .185 in the Fall League, did hit the ball hard twice in the contest, lacing a 102.3-mph single in the sixth inning and a 105.9-mph lineout to shortstop in the eighth. Jalen Miller went 1-for-4 with a walk from the leadoff spot.
Oct. 23:Peoria 6, Scottsdale 1 Tyler Schimpf struggled with command in his final start of the Fall League. The right-hander yielded just one hit over two innings, but he also walked three, one of which came around to score. Bryce Tucker’s streak of three straight scoreless appearances was snapped at three as he gave up two runs on two hits over 1 2/3 innings. Tucker, who threw 27 of his 37 pitches for strikes, walked one and struck out four. Jacob Heyward has certainly had better nights and will look to put Wednesday’s 0-for-4, four-strikeout performance quickly in the rearview mirror. Ricardo Genoves, who was added to the Scottsdale roster after Joey Bart left with an injury, picked up his first AFL hit with a run-scoring double in the second inning. While the boom double was impressive, that was the extent of Genoves’ offensive contributions as he struck out in his next three trips to the plate.
Oct. 22: Scheduled off day for all Arizona Fall League teams.
Oct. 21:Peoria 4, Scottsdale 3 Tristan Beck’s sixth AFL start was done in by a three-run blast in the third inning via Houston prospect J.J. Matijevic. Beck worked four frames and tossed 46 of his 71 pitches for strikes, in addition to walking one batter and allowing five hits. His fastball sat at 93-94 mph, as he compiled four strikeouts against Peoria. San Francisco’s No. 18 prospect owns a 3.63 ERA during his time in the Fall League, with four of his six starts having seen him yield one run or fewer. Heliot Ramos’ struggles continued with an 0-for-3 performance that saw him strike out three times from the No. 3 spot in the order. He did score a run after drawing a walk in the fourth, giving him an eight-game on-base streak.
Oct. 20:Glendale 7, Scottsdale 2 Ricardo Genoves, who was added to the Scorpions' roster as a replacement for the injured Joey Bart, has yet to find his offensive rhythm. Genoves went 0-for-4 on Sunday and is 0-for-7 through two games in the AFL. Jalen Miller finished 0-for-3 and is hitless (0-for-6) over his past two games. Overall, Miller is hitting .200 through seven games.
After coming out of the bullpen for his first six outings, Frank Rubio made his second straight start on Sunday afternoon in Glendale. And for the second straight time, he tossed two scoreless innings. He did allow a hit for the first time in three outings, but he walked none and struck out two, lowering his AFL ERA to 1.80.
Oct. 19:Glendale 5, Scottsdale 2 Tyler Schimpf has posted back-to-back scoreless outings after giving up three earned runs in less than an inning earlier in the month. Schimpf threw 10 of his 17 pitches for strikes and struck out one over a scoreless inning. Heliot Ramos’ rough Fall League continued with a 1-for-4 night for the Scorpions. Ramos singled in his first at-bat and is batting .190 through 15 games. Jacob Heyward had a rough night offensively and finished 0-for-4.
Oct. 18:Scottsdale 4, Mesa 0 Jacob Heyward served as Scottsdale’s designated hitter and cleanup hitter on Friday night and contributed most of the Scorpions offense in their 4-0 win over Mesa. Batting with one out and two men on in the top of the first, Heyward took a 1-0 offering from Tigers starter Anthony Castro out to left field for his first home run of the fall. He doubled in his next at-bat and finished 2-for-3 with a walk. After a very slow start to the AFL, Heyward has gone 5-for-12 with three doubles and a homer over his last four games to bring his average up to .233 and his slugging percentage to .533. Catcher Ricardo Genoves, who replaced Joey Bart on the roster after the club’s top prospect got hurt, made his AFL debut on Friday, serving as Scottsdale’s catcher and No. 8 hitter. He went 0-for-3 at the plate and his arm was tested often by Mesa baserunners. The Solar Sox attempted to steal five times, succeeding three times and getting thrown out by Genoves twice.
Oct. 17: Scheduled day off for all Arizona Fall League teams.
Oct 16:Scottsdale 3, Mesa 0 Frank Rubio made his first start of the Fall League and retired all six batters that he faced. It was his fourth consecutive appearance without allowing a run, while working multiple frames for the first time with Scottsdale. He struck out a pair and lowered his ERA to 2.25. The right-hander has not walked a batter across eight innings in Arizona. Bryce Tucker followed Rubio and delivered two scoreless frames of his own, working around two hits. He did not strike out a batter for the first time in five AFL appearances, but lowered his ERA to 1.23. Jalen Miller started as the Scorpions’ designated hitter, but finished 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, dropping his fall average to .227 and snapping a four-game hitting streak.
Oct. 15:Scottsdale 2, Salt River 1 Tristan Beck has surrendered one earned run or fewer in four of his five AFL starts after giving up one earned run on four hits Tuesday. The right-hander, who worked 4 2/3 innings, faced the minimum through three innings, but ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth as he walked the leadoff man, who eventually came around to score. Beck was able to escape the frame and now has a 2.95 ERA in Arizona.
Heliot Ramos isn’t known for his speed, but he did pick up his first stolen base of the AFL season after collecting a single in the fourth inning. Ramos, who came around to score the eventual winning run, finished 1-for-4. Jacob Heyward went 0-for-2 and was ejected after arguing balls and strikes in the fourth inning.
Oct. 14:Scottsdale 6, Salt River 5 Heliot Ramos served as Scottsdale’s designated hitter on Monday night. His lone hit in four at-bats came in the third, though it was an RBI single that got the Scorpions to within three runs at the time. He struck out twice, giving him 15 K’s in 50 at-bats, and he’s hitting .180 for the season. Tyler Schimpf was summoned early out of the bullpen to relieve Mets lefty David Peterson after he gave up five runs in 2 2/3 innings.
