Springer day to day after injuring shoulder
Hinch 'didn't want to take a chance,' removes CF after 8th-inning dive
HOUSTON -- Astros center fielder George Springer, who has been battling to stay healthy of late, sustained a shoulder injury in Friday's 4-2 loss to the D-backs as he made a diving attempt on A.J. Pollock's RBI single in the eighth inning.
"George is day to day. He could possibly be in the lineup Saturday," Astros manager AJ Hinch said. "When he dove for Pollock's ball, he banged his shoulder like he's done before. We didn't want to take a chance."
Springer was unavailable for comment after the game.
Springer was replaced defensively in center field by Marwin Gonzalez to start the ninth. Gonzalez moved over from left field, while J.D. Davis entered to play left.
Springer sprained his left thumb sliding into second base on a steal attempt on Aug. 5, against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, and was placed on the 10-day disabled list before returning on Aug. 17.
He went 1-for-4 with a run scored on Friday.
