How Brewers will cover center field with Mitchell's injury
SEATTLE -- Brewers center fielder Garrett Mitchell arrived at T-Mobile Park on Wednesday with his left arm in a sling and promptly landed on the 10-day injured list. How long he stays there remains to be determined.
Mitchell suffered multiple left shoulder subluxations -- in layman’s terms, the shoulder popped out of joint -- during Tuesday night’s 11-inning, 6-5 win over the Mariners. He was originally hurt on a slide into third base in the 10th inning, then he played center field in the bottom of the inning but had to leave the game when the shoulder again slipped out of joint on a throw home.
Mitchell will undergo an MRI scan on Thursday morning in Milwaukee to determine the extent of the damage and set a tentative timetable for his return.
With MLB Pipeline’s No. 2 Brewers prospect Sal Frelick dealing with a left thumb injury and fellow outfielder Blake Perkins already on the 40-man roster, Milwaukee called up Perkins to take Mitchell’s place.
“It's one of those things where it's disappointing because you want to be out there and help the team win games,” Mitchell said. "I'm trying to keep it as positive as I can. It's a long season, and there's definitely going to be some time missed. But hopefully, it's not too bad and I can get back as quickly as I can. I'm hoping it's just some rehab and it's good.”
Mitchell, 24, will be difficult to replace. He arrived in the Majors late last August and delivered terrific defense along with an .832 OPS in 28 games, cementing him as the Crew’s Opening Day center fielder in ‘23. He’s hitting .259/.306/.466 in his first 62 plate appearances in 2023.
In the near term, the Brewers could fill center field with a mix of Joey Wiemer (who started there Wednesday), Perkins and utility man Owen Miller, who added outfield to his repertoire during Spring Training and started the series finale against the Mariners in left. Tyrone Taylor, meanwhile, has begun playing games during extended Spring Training in Arizona as he rehabs a right elbow injury. He’s scheduled to advance to Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday.
Eventually, Milwaukee could also consider Frelick, one of the group of prospects dubbed “The Freshmen,” who were chronicled by the club in a documentary series this spring. But he jammed his left thumb on a slide for Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday night in Jacksonville, and he was scratched from Wednesday’s lineup.
The Brewers have been hit hard by injuries so far. Pitchers Brandon Woodruff, Aaron Ashby, Adrian Houser and Gus Varland, infielder Luis Urías and Taylor are all on the injured list.
“Look, [injuries] happen, and you have to move forward,” manager Craig Counsell said. “The medical staff has to try to treat them and get them better as fast as we can, and somebody else gets an opportunity. That’s how it goes.”
By the nature of shoulder subluxations, there were a wide array of possible outcomes for Mitchell in lieu of medical imaging as of Wednesday morning. He said he was sore and uncomfortable, but strength tests in the dugout Tuesday night during the middle of the 10th inning -- and again on Wednesday morning -- left him feeling optimistic.
Still, Mitchell was clearly compromised. As he readied to field Ty France’s tying sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning, he made sure to not hold his glove hand -- attached to the injured shoulder -- too high over his head.
“I'm not quite sure where the impact was that caused it, but when I dove into third my thumb did get caught up, and when I grabbed around the bag, I felt a little shift in my shoulder,” Mitchell said. “I didn't feel a pop or anything like that; I just know when I turned I felt my shoulder start to hurt pretty quickly.
“I got checked last night and was able to put my shoulder over my head, so I felt comfortable going back out there. Then once I made that throw, I felt it shift again. But under the circumstances, I feel good. A little sore but not too bad."
