Top prospect Mitchell among 18 camp invites
MILWAUKEE -- Top-ranked Brewers prospect Garrett Mitchell headlines a list of 18 non-roster invitees to the team’s Major League Spring Training camp, scheduled to begin with pitchers and catchers set to report to American Family Fields of Phoenix on Feb. 18.
"We've been preparing for an on-time arrival in Spring Training in the event that was the outcome, so we'll be ready,” Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns said. “If, for whatever reason, it changes before we show up, we'll adjust. But we're expecting to and instructing all of our players to show up on time."
As of Wednesday morning, those players consisted of members of the 40-man roster plus this slate of non-roster invitees:
• LHP Clayton Andrews
• LHP Aaron Ashby
• RHP Zack Brown
• RHP Jake Cousins
• OF Dylan Cozens
• LHP Blaine Hardy
• C Payton Henry
• RHP Thomas Jankins
• OF Tristen Lutz
• LHP Hoby Milner
• OF Garrett Mitchell
• INF/OF Jace Peterson
• INF/OF Pablo Reyes
• RHP Miguel Sánchez
• LHP Ethan Small
• LHP Quintin Torres-Costa
• INF Brice Turang
The Brewers’ camp roster almost certainly will change, either before or during Spring Training. They are still shopping for a third baseman and have been engaged with former Dodgers All-Star Justin Turner, the top player available at that position. They also have a question mark at first base, as the leading internal candidate there, Daniel Vogelbach, is better suited as a designated hitter. At the moment, there is no DH in National League ballparks.
That could change as MLB and the MLB Players Association negotiate health and safety protocols. Other rules that were implemented for last year’s pandemic-shortened regular season included expanded rosters, seven-inning doubleheaders, a runner placed at second base for the start of each extra inning and an expanded postseason. At the moment, none of those rules are in place for 2021.
"One of the things we learned last year is we have to be ready to adjust,” Stearns said. “I think last year the number of playoff teams changed the night before the season was set to begin, and some of the rules changed midseason. I think we understand we have to be agile."
One point worth emphasizing: Stearns' target for setting a roster is Opening Day, not the first day of Spring Training.
"I do think that's important for everyone to understand -- in this offseason maybe more than others in the past,” Stearns said.
