Soaring Beyond the Diamond – A Legacy of Community Impact

December 3, 2024

The roar of the crowd at Oriole Park, the crack of the bat, and the thrilling chase for victory on the field—these are the moments that make being a Baltimore Orioles fan unforgettable. But for the Orioles, winning isn’t confined to the scoreboard. They’ve woven themselves into the very fabric of Baltimore, transforming lives and uplifting the community with the same passion they bring to the game. Throughout 2024, the Orioles were not only winning on the field but also committed to making a difference off the field, proving that their legacy extends far beyond the diamond.

Rallying for Sarasota Hurricane Milton Relief

As Hurricane Milton bared down on the Gulf of Mexico, the Orioles stepped up to support the Sarasota community. They worked quickly to transform their Spring Training facility into a vital staging site for Florida Power & Light (FPL) and a sandbag distribution center for Sarasota County. This proactive approach not only aided immediate relief efforts but also reflects the organization's commitment to standing by its neighbors during this crisis. The Orioles collaborated with local leaders, including the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and the Sarasota Chamber, to assess ongoing needs and determine the best ways to provide assistance in the coming days, weeks, and months. Through these efforts, the Orioles demonstrated that community support is at the heart of their mission and showed their dedication to the Sarasota community.

In total, the organization met and exceeded their match challenge goal, raising more than $1 million to aid families and individuals affected by Hurricane Milton across Sarasota and Manatee counties.

Pitch-In Blood Drive

In addition to their monetary donations, the Orioles, in partnership with MedStar Health and the American Red Cross, organized a Pitch-In Blood Drive to support those impacted by the hurricanes in urgent need of blood donations. The event, held at Oriole Park, provided an opportunity for the entire Birdland community to come together in the spirit of generosity and support for those facing medical emergencies. Recognizing that every two seconds someone in the U.S. requires a blood transfusion, the drive was a timely response to the critical need for blood in the wake of natural disasters. The Oriole Bird joined in to cheer on donors, creating an uplifting atmosphere as volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help save lives.

All Faiths Food Bank Turkey Distribution

The Orioles once again partnered with All Faiths Food Bank to host the annual “ThankFull” Thanksgiving turkey distribution at Ed Smith Stadium, providing essential support to families in need throughout the Sarasota community. In their fourth consecutive year of collaboration, the initiative was a tremendous success. Volunteers from Orange & Black Gives Back, the Orioles’ employee volunteer program, were also on-site, helping to make the event a meaningful and impactful experience for all involved. In total, All Faiths Food Bank distributed 910 turkeys and side dishes across multiple locations, including a significant portion from the Orioles’ spring training campus. The long-standing tradition, which began in 2014, helps ensure those facing food insecurity can enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. The event was part of All Faiths Food Bank’s broader mission to alleviate hunger in the region.

Making a Difference at Harlem Park Elementary Middle School

Earlier this year, the Orioles announced their Adopt-A-School campaign, endorsed by Baltimore City Public Schools, in support of Harlem Park Elementary Middle School in West Baltimore. The Adopt-A-School campaign is a dedicated approach to developing partnerships between City Schools, the Orioles, and their network of supporters and community organizations. Ultimately, the program is grounded in the belief that unwavering support and solid opportunities can play a pivotal role in accelerating student and school success.

The Orioles’ involvement in this West Baltimore school isn’t just about providing resources; it’s about creating an environment where young minds and education professionals feel supported and encouraged to reach their full potential. It’s building the trust and confidence that comes with having a heavy hitter in your corner. Through mentorship opportunities, classroom set-ups, and academic resource support, the Orioles are helping to build a foundation for lifelong success.

Every Friday, Oriole Park transforms into a celebration of Harlem Park Elementary Middle School. The stadium proudly displays the Harlem Park x Baltimore Orioles logo, a symbol of the deep connection between the team and the school. The excitement kicks off as Harlem Park students take center stage, enthusiastically shouting "Play ball!" to start the game. The Orioles players, dressed in custom Harlem Park t-shirts, bring the fun during batting practice with an intense game of Rock, Paper, Scissors against the students. The stakes are high, and the competition fierce, as more than one player has had to hand over their batting practice gear to victorious students—turning a simple game into an unforgettable experience that cements the bond between the team and the next generation of Baltimore’s champions.

These helping hands reached out to the dedicated educators at Harlem Park Elementary Middle School as well. The Orioles made their impact felt from the very first event they hosted: Teacher Appreciation Day. Partnering with Dunkin' Donuts and Weis Markets, the Orioles ensured that teachers were celebrated and well-nourished, providing them with breakfast and lunch to keep their energy high throughout the day. But the Orioles didn’t stop there. As the new school year approached, Orioles players, their families, and staff rolled up their sleeves and headed to Harlem Park. They transformed classrooms into vibrant, inspiring spaces, adorning the walls with encouraging posters, educational messages, and a whole lot of love. This heartfelt gesture wasn’t just about preparing the school for the students’ return—it was about showing the teachers and students that the Orioles are deeply invested in their success, both in the classroom and beyond.

Making a heartwarming impact this winter, the Orioles partnered with Operation Warm and T. Rowe Price to ensure all 430 students at Harlem Park Elementary Middle School were equipped for the cold months ahead. This collaborative effort provided students with essential winter apparel, including coats, hoodies, and accessories, fostering both warmth and confidence. On the day of the event, dedicated volunteers from both the Orioles and T. Rowe Price welcomed students and staff, expertly fitting each child with a brand-new coat. This initiative not only addressed the immediate need for winter clothing but also reinforced the Orioles’ commitment to uplifting the community, proving that their influence extends all season-round.

Honoring Our Heroes: A Salute to Service

The Orioles have a rich tradition of honoring the brave men and women who serve in the military. As fans settle into their seats, the energy shifts from excitement to reverence when the team pauses to honor our nation’s heroes. Their military initiatives are a cornerstone of the Orioles community outreach, demonstrating the team's respect and gratitude for those who sacrifice so much for our country. Last regular season, the Orioles hosted 14 military organizations through their Military Suites Program, presented by RBR-Technologies. These organizations support active-duty military, veterans, and their families, focusing on mental health resources for active-duty members and veterans, supporting Gold Star families, and providing resources for all military families.

One of the most cherished traditions at Oriole Park is the regular military meet and greets. These events provide service members and veterans with an opportunity to meet Orioles players, coaches, staff, and even owner David Rubenstein, creating unforgettable memories for all involved. The meet and greets are more than a photo opportunity; it’s a moment of recognition and a reminder that their service is valued. Faithly Orioles players can be seen greeting these guests in a moment where admiration flows both ways, and players express their gratitude for their service and support.

In addition to these meet and greets, the Orioles also recognize military personnel during games with special ceremonies. These tributes serve as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those in uniform, and they help foster a sense of unity and respect among fans. The Orioles' commitment to honoring the military is evident in every aspect of their operation, from discounted tickets for service members to special military-themed events that highlight the importance of supporting our troops.

37th Annual Food & Funds Drive

The 37th Annual Orioles Food & Funds Drive, driven by AAA, is a hallmark of the Orioles' community outreach, exemplifies the organization's unwavering commitment to supporting local families in need. Held each year during the regular season, this cherished event brings together fans, players, and community members to contribute to a cause greater than baseball. This year’s drive continued its tradition by collecting more than 2,400 pounds of non-perishable food items, nearly $13,000 in monetary donations, and a $25,000 match from Giant Food to benefit the Maryland Food Bank. With the enthusiastic participation of Orioles fans and the dedicated efforts of volunteers, the drive not only addressed immediate hunger but also fostered a spirit of generosity and unity within the Baltimore community.

Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities: A Home Run for Baltimore’s Youth

The Orioles’ commitment to Baltimore doesn’t stop at the gates of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It reaches into the neighborhoods where the next generation of baseball stars is waiting to be discovered. Through the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program, the Orioles are igniting a passion for the sport in young hearts across the city.

Imagine the scene: a group of kids, gloves in hand, eyes focused, ready to learn from the pros. The Orioles have taken the RBI program to new heights, expanding its reach to more than 600 children and giving them the chance to step onto the field. The crack of the bat during an RBI game is more than just the sound of contact; it’s the sound of dreams being forged.

This year, the RBI program blossomed under the Orioles’ care. Participation was at an all-time high with 44 total teams spanning Baltimore and the surrounding counties, 151 coaches, and 12 games played each season. The Orioles aren’t just teaching the fundamentals of baseball, they’re imparting life lessons that extend far beyond the game. Discipline, teamwork, and perseverance—these are the values the Orioles are instilling in Baltimore’s youth, helping them navigate the challenges of life both on and off the field.

Multiple players took their support for the RBI teams to the next level, sending participants personalized video messages before their playoff games. In these inspiring clips the big leaguers shared insider tips and insights on pregame routines, offering a glimpse into the mindset and preparation of a professional athlete. Their words weren’t just about strategy—they were about instilling confidence, focus, and the belief that these young players could rise to the occasion and achieve greatness on the field.

The Orioles’ dedication to the RBI program is a testament to their belief that every child deserves a chance to play, dream, and succeed. For these young athletes, the Orioles are more than just a team—they’re mentors, role models, and a beacon of hope.

From Harlem Park to CollegeBound: Opening Doors to Bright Futures

As the Orioles work to inspire the youth of Baltimore on the field, they are equally committed to helping them achieve their goals in the classroom. Their dedication to education is evident through their adoption of Harlem Park Elementary Middle School and their support of the CollegeBound Foundation. By investing in Harlem Park, the Orioles are making a long-term commitment to the success and well-being of Baltimore’s children.

This commitment to education extends seamlessly into their support for the CollegeBound program, a Baltimore-based organization that aids city students in pursuing and completing a college degree or other post-secondary options. Through this program, students find guidance, support, and a clear path to their future. The Orioles’ involvement with CollegeBound is about more than just funding; it’s about opening doors that might have otherwise remained closed. Through scholarships, college fairs, and mentorship, the Orioles are helping students turn their aspirations into reality.

This season, the impact of the CollegeBound program has been nothing short of extraordinary. More students are enrolling in college, more scholarships are being awarded, and the ripple effect of this support is being felt throughout Baltimore. From the early stages of development at Harlem Park to the culmination of dreams through CollegeBound, the Orioles are ensuring that Baltimore’s youth have every opportunity to succeed.

The Orioles understand that education is the key to unlocking a brighter future, and they are determined to help Baltimore’s youth find that key. By bridging the gap between elementary education and college aspirations, the Orioles are walking side by side with Baltimore’s youth, knocking down barriers and opening doors.

In a city where baseball is more than just a game, the Orioles have proven that their influence reaches every corner of the community. They are champions not only in the sport they play but also in the lives they touch. As the Orioles continue to thrive on the field, their legacy of community impact will remain a vital part of their identity, reminding us all of the power of sports to bring people together and create meaningful change.
