Fatherhood has changed holidays for Vogt

A's catcher Stephen Vogt has been plenty busy this offseason, rehabbing from foot surgery in preparation for the 2015 season while playing dad to daughter Payton and newborn son Clark with his wife, Alyssa.

They're soaking up the holiday season as a family of four, and Vogt was kind enough to take some time to chat with MLB.com about the memories he's creating as a father, as well as ones he remembers best from his own childhood.

MLB.com: What are your best memories of the holidays when you were growing up?

Vogt: The best memories for me were just getting to spend time with family and going to the Christmas Eve candlelight service and taking time to celebrate the season. Just being with family and everyone coming together and being happy, sharing the gift giving, that was the biggest thing instilled in me from my parents. It's not just about the receiving of the gifts, but the gifts that we've been given and the gifts that we are able to give others. I think that's my favorite part of Christmas, giving to people that you care about and love.

MLB.com: What traditions do you have or hope to create with your family?

Vogt: I think the biggest thing for me that I'd hope to create with my children and my family is just helping them realize that Christmas is a time to spend with family and reflect on the things that you're thankful for and remember why we celebrate Christmas. It's a time for thinking of others.

MLB.com: How has the holiday season changed for you since becoming a father?

Vogt: It's definitely changed a lot. Once you have kids, you see it through their eyes. The way my daughter lights up whenever we talk about Christmas or we turn on the Christmas lights, it's amazing. It just becomes all about your kids, and I think that's the best part about Christmas. It's such an exciting time, and I think having kids just exploits that and makes it such a great time.

MLB.com: What's the best thing you ever found in your stocking?

Vogt: My wife's family is huge on stockings, so I'm going to go with a set of five different LED flashlights I got a couple of years ago. They're all in five different places strategically around the house, of course.

MLB.com: Is there a present you always wanted but never received?

Vogt: I always wanted a skateboard, but my parents would never get me one because they didn't want me to get hurt. Looking back, definitely smart.

MLB.com: What's the worst present you ever received?

Vogt: I was at one of those white elephant gift exchanges. Someone didn't realize it, but we re-gifted the same cheese platter about five different times to five different people, and I ended up with it. I got it from my sister-in-law and was too passive aggressive to call her out on it that it was a re-gift. Then I re-gifted it again. It's become kind of the family joke. I believe my brother-in-law, Josh, has it now.

MLB.com: How would you describe yourself as a shopper?

Vogt: I am a love-to-wait-until-the-last-second, make-the-quick-decision and watch-everyone-else-in-the-mall-freak kind of guy.

MLB.com: If you could get Bob Melvin anything for Christmas, what would it be?

Vogt: Hand sanitizer.

MLB.com: Doesn't he have enough?

Vogt: It would be a lifetime supply.

MLB.com: Do you make any New Year's resolutions?

Vogt: I typically do make a New Year's resolution. They're usually little things, but things that I find I need to do to change in my personal life.
