A talented prospect with a familiar last name is gaining attention in Venezuela and making waves in international scouting circles.
Luisangel Acuna, the younger brother of Braves top prospect Ronald Acuna Jr., will be eligible to sign when the international signing period begins July 2. The Rangers are among the teams that have expressed interest in the muscular 5-foot-9, 160-pound infielder. The Braves were initially connected to the younger Acuna, but do not appear to be in the mix to sign him.
Luisangel is a shortstop, but some scouts believe his skill set might be better suited for second base. He has shown some power and has the potential to be an average-or-better hitter with proper instruction, but he'll have to grow. The teenager is best known for his bat, but could also develop into a decent runner.
Ronald Acuna Sr. was also a Minor League player and the family is related to former Major League pitcher Kelvim Escobar and Royals' shortstop Alcides Escobar.
It's worth noting that Ronald was also viewed as undersized and didn't garner much attention on the international market when he was the same age. He signed with the Braves for close to $100,000. The younger Acuna could sign for a bonus in the $350,000 to $500,000 range.
But Acuna isn't the only recognizable name on the international market.
Miguel Tejada Jr., the son of former Major League shortstop Miguel Tejada, will also be eligible to sign July 2. A former outfielder, the younger Tejada could end up at third base. The 6-foot slugger has shown good bat speed, good hands and strong arm. He also projects to be an average runner. The White Sox are among the teams that have been linked to him.
