Marshall in stable condition after being hit by liner

PHOENIX -- D-backs Minor League pitcher Evan Marshall is in stable condition but remains hospitalized in El Paso after he suffered a fractured skull and underwent surgery following Tuesday's game with Triple-A Reno.

Marshall was struck on his right temple with a line drive while pitching for the Aces. The 25-year-old underwent surgery to alleviate swelling and pressure. He is now alert, engaging in conversation, and is able to walk.

"Those are tough situations," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "It's scary, it's very scary, and our prayers are with his family and him and just for him to just take his time and get better step-by-step. It's not easy."

It wasn't the first time this season that a D-backs pitcher was struck in the head by a line drive. Starter Archie Bradley had it happen during a start on April 28, and he ended up on the disabled list for two weeks.

Bradley, who was able to avoid having surgery unlike Marshall, said he reached out to Marshall with a text message after hearing about the incident to offer some encouragement.

"Obviously it hit home a little bit more for me than it did most of the guys," Bradley said. "This is just a game and then something like that happens and you can't help but just feel in your heart and hope the best for him and his family. Going back to me, it just makes me take a hard, long look at how lucky I was."

Marshall was 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA in 13 relief appearances for the D-backs earlier this season. He was 3-2 with a 6.40 ERA in 31 games for Reno.
