Clase, Díaz earn nod as June's Relievers of the Month
The Guardians’ Emmanuel Clase and the Mets’ Edwin Díaz both made the ninth inning a breeze for their managers in June. For that, they’ve been recognized as the Reliever of the Month for their respective leagues in June.
The 24-year-old Clase was as close to perfect as you could come in June, as the flamethrower held batters scoreless across his 15 innings of work. He only allowed seven hits the entire month, as batters hit a measly .137 against him. He leads the American League with 18 saves -- 11 of which came during June.
Clase’s average pitch velocity of 97.4 mph is tops among relievers in baseball and batters are averaging .200 off his cutter this season.
Díaz was nearly just as sparkling in June, allowing one run in 9 2/3 innings for the first place Mets. Díaz converted all five of his save opportunities in June, while recording a miniscule 0.93 WHIP. His electric fastball continues to fool batters, as well, as he ranks in the 100th percentile in whiff rate and strikeout rate.
The 28-year-old’s top moment of the year came on June 12, when he struck out five and reached 101.6 mph with his fastball.
This is Díaz’s fifth time being named Reliever of the Month, with the last instance coming in August 2018 when he was with the Mariners. This is Clase’s first time winning any award.
