TORONTO -- Edwin Encarnacion was held out of the Blue Jays' lineup on Monday night against the Phillies because of a jammed right index finger.
Encarnacion sustained the minor injury when he stole third base in Sunday's 10-9 victory over the Orioles. He slid into third base in the second inning and jammed his finger on Manny Machado's foot.
The injury is not considered serious, and Encarnacion is expected to play Tuesday, but for now he is being considered day to day.
"He jammed his finger when he slid on his stolen base," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "Pretty sure [one day] is all it's going to be."
Encarnacion's injury comes at a rather unfortunate time for Toronto. The Blue Jays' veteran slugger was heating up with six hits -- including three home runs -- and seven RBIs over his previous three games.
Tulo back on track
Injured shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was originally expected to re-join the Blue Jays on Monday, but he suffered a setback late last week in his return from a sore right quadriceps muscle.
Tulowitzki was hesitant running the bases on Friday and was temporarily shut down. He is scheduled to resume baseball activities at the club's Minor League complex in Florida on Wednesday.
"I did hear that he's feeling better," Gibbons said. "I think he's going to start up again on Wednesday, that's the latest. We'll just kind of see where that goes."
Diamond time
The Blue Jays selected the contract of left-hander Scott Diamond from Triple-A Buffalo prior to Monday's game against the Phillies.
Switch pitcher Pat Venditte was optioned to Buffalo, while lefty Franklin Morales was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Diamond on the 40-man roster.
Diamond, 29, was 4-6 with a 3.16 ERA in 12 starts for Buffalo. The Guelph, Ontario, native is 19-27 with a 4.43 ERA in 58 Major League starts, all with the Twins.
"He'll come in and be long relief, middle relief," Gibbons said of Diamond. "We're pretty strapped down there, it has been a long week with bullpen relief. He can throw some innings, which we desperately need."
