Dylan Covey (shoulder) lands on injured list
Vieria called up from Triple-A to take open roster spot
KANSAS CITY -- The White Sox have placed right-hander Dylan Covey on the 10-day injured list as he works through right shoulder inflammation. Covey had thrown 77 pitches last Wednesday against Washington and indicated at the time he was having trouble getting loose.
To bolster their pitching troops for Sunday's series finale in Kansas City, the White Sox recalled right-hander Thyago Vieira from Triple-A Charlotte. Vieira was 3-1 with a 4.87 ERA and four saves for Charlotte. In three appearances for the White Sox earlier this year, Vieira was 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA.
Covey's absence left the White Sox scrambling to finalize their starting pitching plans for the home series against the Nationals, which begins Monday night.
Manager Rick Renteria said highly touted prospect Dylan Cease, ranked No. 3 in the organization's system and No. 19 overall by MLB Pipeline, is not an option to join the Major League club at this time.
"It's not going to be Dylan Cease," Renteria said. "If there's any speculation, we can nip that in the bud right now. He's still working [at Triple-A]. We want to put him in as good a place as possible before he joins us."
Renteria said left-hander Manny Banuelos is good to go and could be a possibility to start one of the two games against Washington.
