SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Royals, who have had success in the past with reclamation projects such as Ryan Madson, added another potential one on Friday.
The Royals announced that they have signed right-hander Drew Storen to a Minor League deal with an invitation to Spring Training. MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal originally reported the agreement.
A source told MLB.com that Storen can make $1.25 million in base salary if in the Majors, with $900,000 of performance bonuses. Also per the source, Storen has a March 25 opt-out date.
Storen, 31, is trying to come back from Tommy John surgery he underwent in December 2017. He missed all of 2018, but general manager Dayton Moore said Storen will have no throwing limitations.
"He is good to go and ready to compete for a job on the team," Moore told MLB.com.
Storen last pitched for the Reds, making 58 appearances in 2017 with a 4.45 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 54 2/3 innings. He previously pitched for the Nationals, Blue Jays and Mariners in his eight big league seasons.
Earlier this year, the Royals signed Homer Bailey to Minor League contract as well, hoping he can bounce back from three straight seasons of a 6.00+ ERA.
