ARLINGTON -- The Rangers signed pitcher right-hander Andrew Hutchison to a Major League contract and gave him the starting assignment against the Orioles on Sunday.
Hutchison last pitched in the Dodgers' organization, going 4-1 with a 2.14 ERA in seven starts and two relief appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was 3-0 with a 1.22 ERA in seven starts and did not allow a run in his last 23 innings.
Hutchison began the season with the Phillies and had a 4.64 ERA in 11 relief appearances. He was designated for assignment on May 31 and rejected outright assignment to Triple-A.
When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster, and 25-man roster if he was on that as well. Within seven days of the transaction (it was previously 10 days), the player must be traded, released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
The Dodgers signed him to a Minor League contract, but Hutchison had the right to request his release on July 31 if not brought to the Major Leagues. He did so, and was signed by Texas.
Hutchison has made 74 starts and 19 relief appearances in his Major League career with the Blue Jays, Pirates and Phillies, with a record of 31-22 and a 4.92 ERA. He was in the Blue Jays' rotation in 2014-15, going 24-18 with a 4.97 ERA combined in those two years.
Hutchison last pitched on Monday, throwing 6 1/3 scoreless innings against El Paso. Rangers manager Jeff Banister said the team decided to go with Hutchison on Sunday because it was his day to pitch, and because it allows Texas to give its starters extra rest.
"All the reports have been good," Banister said. "He has been throwing the ball well in Triple-A."
