Fister limps off mound with sore right knee
Rangers right-hander exits during 6th inning against Astros
ARLINGTON -- Rangers starter Doug Fister left Friday night's 7-3 loss to the Astros with right knee soreness after throwing one pitch in the sixth inning. He will be evaluated on Saturday.
Fister threw an 84-mph changeup to Yuli Gurriel, who fouled it off. After that pitch, Fister walked gingerly off the mound, favoring his right leg, and Rangers athletic trainer Kevin Harmon went to the mound to check on Fister. After a brief conversation, Harmon and Fister walked back to the dugout and Fister was replaced by Matt Bush.
"I kind of tweaked my knee and I felt it was time to shut it down that inning," Fister said.
Fister had thrown 86 pitches, including 51 strikes, when he left the game. He finished having allowed five earned runs on six hits, two walks and a homer. He struck out two.
The veteran right-hander has spent time on the disabled list already this season with a right groin strain that caused him to miss 13 games starting on April 10.
Fister said the two injuries are unrelated and that he didn't feel any soreness in the knee until throwing his last pitch.
Manager Jeff Banister said he thought Fister looked decent in his five innings, with the exception of the second inning that went awry.
"I thought he threw the ball well, he did give up the four runs in the one inning where a couple pitches [were] elevated, [there were] some balls that didn't get hit hard inside that inning, there were some ground balls that got through," Banister said. "Still, the sinker and changeup combo was a solid combination for him, he kind of settled in and didn't give up anything until the home run to [Alex Bregman]. I felt like even after the four runs, he threw some quality pitches."
