Turner on record HBP pace

Dodgers' third baseman plunked 5 times this season

April 22nd, 2017

PHOENIX -- Dodgers third baseman has been hit by pitches five times this year already, putting him on pace to be hit by 52 pitches for the season.
That would shatter the franchise record of 20 set in 1900 by Brooklyn's Hughie Jennings, with the Los Angeles record of 18 by in 2004.
The latest came in the seventh inning Friday night, when Turner's jersey was grazed by a pitch from D-backs right-hander during Arizona's 13-5 victory.
Turner's left hand was still sore before the game after a drilling Tuesday night by the Rockies' forced him to sit out Wednesday night.
Turner said he's not backing away for fear of more plunkings.
"I've always been hit a lot," said Turner, who was hit 13 times in 2015 and 10 times last year. "I stand close to the plate. It's just something that's going to happen. There's a certain level of understanding when guys are just pitching in. When guys are missing a ton, that's when I have a problem with it. I know guys are going to try to pitch me in and sometimes miss a little too far in, and I think that's just part of the game."
Turner said he doesn't fear that his hitting style and stance -- in which he moves into the plate when the pitch approaches -- puts him in jeopardy of a serious injury.
"It's just the way I hit," he said. "Is there a chance I get hit in the hand or head? Yeah, but it could happen if I back up too. It's not ever in my mind. I like getting on base any way I can, and getting hit is part of that. It helps my on-base percentage."
Turner wears a protective elbow pad and last year, after being hit on the ribs, briefly wore a protective patch over the injured area.
"When I'm seeing the ball good, I can kind of maneuver around to get hit in a spot so it doesn't hurt so much," he said. "The other night I didn't see the ball and didn't get out of the way."
