Dodgers right-hander Dustin May, who was rehabbing after surgery last year to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm, will not pitch in 2024 following a procedure to repair an esophageal tear, the Dodgers confirmed on Saturday night.

“While at dinner on Wednesday, Dodger right-hander Dustin May experienced sudden pain in his esophagus and stomach that continued after he returned home," the team said in a statement. "He contacted the medical staff and ultimately underwent successful surgery on his esophagus. May will not return to pitch for the Dodgers this season.”

ESPN's Jeff Passan was the first to report May's situation.

May, who was the Dodgers’ No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline when he made his Major League debut in 2019, posted a 2.93 ERA over 113 2/3 innings from 2019-21. He then had to undergo Tommy John surgery, which caused him to miss the remainder of the ’21 campaign and most of the ’22 season. Last season, May pitched well before the flexor tendon injury, posting a 2.63 ERA through nine starts.

With a fastball that has regularly touched 100 mph, along with an assortment of secondary offerings, May's absence has been felt along with several other hits to the Dodgers' starting rotation -- Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Walker Buehler, among others, are currently sidelined, as well.
