CHICAGO -- The Cubs were hoping to carry the offensive momentum of Sunday's game in Cincinnati into an important series against the Dodgers this week. Taking on Los Angeles presented a good litmus test for a Chicago club still searching for a rhythm.

Rain in Monday's forecast put the showdown with the reigning world champions on hold. The opener of the three-game set was postponed due to inclement weather, but the Cubs and Dodgers will make up the game as part of a split doubleheader on Tuesday.

"You've got to bring it every day," Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo said. "And the Dodgers are the world champs. It's always fun playing the world champs. It'll be exciting."

First pitch at the Friendly Confines on Tuesday is scheduled for 1:20 p.m. CT with the second game slotted in the original 6:40 p.m. CT time slot. Both games will consist of seven innings under the rules for the 2021 MLB season.

The Cubs will plan on sending right-hander Kyle Hendricks (originally slated to start Monday) to the mound in Game 1. Chicago's Game 2 starter is currently to be determined. Righty Adbert Alzolay was initially slated to start on Tuesday night, but Chicago is leaving its plans for the nightcap flexible for the time being.

Tickets for Monday's postponed game will be valid to use for Tuesday's rescheduled 1:20 p.m. contest. The gates are expected to open approximately 90 minutes prior to first pitch. Mobile tickets via the MLB Ballpark app will automatically update with the makeup game information. No ticket exchange is necessary.

Separate tickets are required for each game. Fans will be required to exit the ballpark after the completion of the makeup game, and then the gates will reopen approximately 90 minutes after the last pitch of the first game.

Chicago lost to the Reds on Sunday, 13-12, but it was a breakout five-homer, 14-hit day for the offense that came at the end of a tough 2-7 road trip. Similarly, the Dodgers posted 16 runs in a win over the Brewers Sunday after losing 10 of their previous 13 games.

"The Dodgers, I know they've been scuffling a little bit," Rizzo said. "They're ready to get rolling, too. Just like we are."

The postponement buys the Cubs another day of rest and evaluation for Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner, who were out of the planned lineup Monday. Happ and Hoerner collided in shallow center in the eighth inning of Sunday's game in center field.

The rainout also delayed the return of outfielder Joc Pederson, who was activated from the 10-day injured list after his bout with a left wrist injury. Pederson was in the leadoff spot in the planned lineup against his former Dodgers teammates.

"A chance to face some of your old friends," Cubs manager David Ross said, "is always something that I think a lot of players take a lot of pride in. It's fun. He's got a lot of history with those guys, a really good history, winning history, with that group."
