DENVER -- Chase Utley's two-out double capped a five-run ninth inning that gave the Dodgers a 12-10 victory over the Rockies and secured a series victory in a wild weekend at Coors Field.
The Dodgers had an early 7-1 lead, only to see the Rockies chip away and take a 10-7 lead with a five-run bottom of the eighth. But Rockies closer Jake McGee gave up five hits and a walk during an inning that saw him wild-pitch in the tying run, and give up a Corey Seager RBI double after the go-ahead hit by Utley.
"That shows the character of this club," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "To get seven early, lose the lead and to respond after that says a lot about our guys. It was a crazy day. Four-hour games take a lot out of you. It was a total team win today."

The Rockies, who got four hits and four RBIs from Gerardo Parra, had a chance to escape the ninth. But shortstop Trevor Story could not get Trayce Thompson's ground ball out of his glove in time to give second baseman DJ LeMahieu time to turn a potential game-ending double play.
"It's not easy, but at the same time I've got to get ahead of hitters, can't let them get into hitters' counts and look over the plate more," said McGee, who suffered his first blown save in five chances. "I've just got to bear down a little more, those things kind of happen in certain games, but everything happened at once."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Rescue lefty: Rockies reliever Chris Rusin was greeted in the third inning by a Seager triple that drove in two runs, both charged to starter Jordan Lyles (2 2/3 innings, seven runs, five earned), but Rusin proceeded to pitch 3 1/3 scoreless innings with only Seager's hit, two walks and three strikeouts. In his last three appearances -- all under similar circumstances -- he has thrown 9 2/3 scoreless innings.
Puig, again: After quashing a Friday-night threat with an amazing throw, Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig robbed Brandon Barnes of extra bases with an amazing catch Sunday, holding on after crashing into the fence and tumbling to the warning track to end Colorado's three-run fourth inning. More >

Unsung swinger: Catcher Dustin Garneau helped bring the Rockies back into the game with an RBI single in the three-run fourth, and his leadoff double opened the five-run eighth.
"There's really no game that's out of reach for us -- we showed that today by coming back a couple of times," said Garneau, who is 4-for-10 since being called up to replace Nick Hundley, who suffered a concussion on April 13, but could return Monday.

Make-up plays: Corner outfielders Puig and Thompson each made misplays, but also made run-saving spectacular catches.
"The ball to Yasiel snaked on him, the way the outfield is cut," said Roberts.

"For whatever reason, the command has gotten away from Jordan in all but one start [a seven-inning effort at Cincinnati]. That really hasn't been an issue in the past. We're just trying to get to the bottom of that." -- Rockies manager Walt Weiss on Lyles, who has made it as far as five innings just once in four starts this season.

The only other time the Rockies overcame a six-run deficit against the Dodgers, guess what? The Dodgers won the game. That's right. On May 3, 2008, the Rockies trailed 6-0 entering the bottom of the second, came back to tie the game, but ended up losing, 12-7.
REPLAY REVIEW
Weiss made a challenge in the eighth, hoping Barnes beat out a bunt with a runner on and the Rockies trailing, 7-6. But it took 32 seconds for umpires to confirm the "out" call, and Barnes ended up with a sacrifice.

In what would have been the catch of the year, Rockies right fielder Carlos Gonzalez flipped into the stands in foul ground while chasing Yasmani Grandal's fly with one out and one on base. Umpires ruled he made the catch, but it took just 25 seconds for the call to be overturned.

Rockies: Lefty Jorge De La Rosa (1-2, 9.87 ERA) has been scratched from the start in Monday night's opener of four-game set with the Pirates at Coors Field at 6:40 p.m. MT, because he has been battling a stomach flu. The Rockies announced Sunday that Chad Bettis will get the start.
