Dodgers sign touted Korean RHP Hyun-Seok Jang
LOS ANGELES -- Last week, the Dodgers made an under-the-radar trade with the White Sox, dealing away prospects Aldrin Batista and Maximo Martinez in exchange for international slot money.
At the time it seemed like just a simple deal for the Dodgers. But over the last few days it became clear that Los Angeles made that move in order to be aggressive in signing one of the top international players of the cycle.
On Tuesday, the Dodgers officially came to terms with Korean pitcher Hyun-Seok Jang. The 19-year-old right-hander, who just finished high school in Korea, was widely expected to become the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming Korean Baseball Organization Draft in September.
According to sources, which were then confirmed by Jang’s agency, Leeco Sports, the right-hander and the Dodgers agreed on a deal with a $900,000 signing bonus.
While still raw, which is to be expected for a 19-year-old with no professional experience yet, scouts have raved about the potential Jang brings to the table. He already stands around 6-foot-3 and has been clocked as high as 97 mph with his four-seam fastball.
Aside from an upper-90s fastball, Jang also features a slider, curveball, changeup and the newly-described sweeper. In seven appearances as a senior at Masan Yongma High School in Changwon, South Korea, Jang went 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA, striking out 49 hitters in just 27 1/3 innings.
Jang will get some valuable experience in September, as he was added to the Korean national team for the upcoming Asian Games in China. Jang will be the youngest player on the Korean roster.
After that, it remains to be seen where the Dodgers have Jang start his professional career. Jang is also expected to be added to the Dodgers’ Top 30 prospect list by MLB Pipeline. He will likely be ranked somewhere in the low-to-mid 20s on the list, giving the Dodgers another highly-touted recruit to an already loaded farm system.
