Watch: Didi makes amazing grab in 9th
The Twins came oh so close in Game 3 of the ALDS, but the Yankees never bent. And shortstop Didi Gregorius helped to save the day with an incredible diving catch in the ninth.
With runners on first and second with one out, the Twins' Jorge Polanco ripped a 106-mph screamer to the left side of the infield. Gregorius sprawled to his left and made the catch for the second out of the inning. Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman then struck out big bopper Nelson Cruz to preserve a 5-1 win and end the series.
"That was unbelievable," said Zack Britton, who tossed 1 1/3 strong innings in relief. "We weren't sure if he caught it or not. You have to make plays like that if you want to advance and go deep in the playoffs."
Gregorius also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Game 3, continuing his recent dominance of the Twins. In Game 2, he hit a grand slam that put the game out of reach, and he now has a career .349 average against Minnesota in 129 at-bats (including postseason), with 10 homers and 45 RBIs.
"It seemed like every time we needed a big play, they hit it hard and we made a great play," said first baseman DJ LeMahieu. "So, I just feel like everyone really showed off their defensive versatility, their ability and made some great plays today."
