The Marlins and Nationals have had difficulty agreeing on a fair price for catcher J.T. Realmuto in trade talks this year. But the Marlins could be active with other moves in the coming weeks.
One such possibility: The Brewers have checked in with Miami regarding the versatile Derek Dietrich, although no deal is close, a source told MLB.com.
Dietrich, 28, is enjoying a career offensive season, with an .845 OPS in 75 games while playing mostly left field. An ability to move around the diamond is one of Dietrich's best attributes, especially for a contender like Milwaukee. He is one of only three players active in the Majors -- Martin Prado and Sean Rodriguez are the others -- with at least 100 career starts at second base, third base and in left field.

Six players have started at second base for the Brewers this year; the team's overall production at the position -- a .677 OPS -- ranks in the bottom half of the Majors. Dietrich's ability play the outfield would be especially valuable in the near term, with Lorenzo Cain currently on the disabled list.
The Marlins have made it known to other clubs that they will consider offers on Dietrich ahead of the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline, and Dietrich's value in the marketplace may be at an all-time high. He's due to have two more seasons of arbitration eligibility before he can become a free agent after the 2020 season.
In addition to Realmuto and Dietrich, the Marlins are open-minded to the idea of moving first baseman Justin Bour, second baseman Starlin Castro and infielder Miguel Rojas.
