NEW YORK -- Some people have cake on their birthdays, throw parties or go to fancy dinners.

David Peterson wins baseball games.

Peterson saved one of the best games of his career for his 29th birthday on Tuesday, striking out a career-high 11 batters in the Mets’ 7-2 win over the Red Sox. He became one of 24 players in Major League history to record double-digit strikeouts on his special day, falling four shy of the record 15 punchouts Gerrit Cole collected on Sept. 8, 2019, his own 29th birthday.

Peterson also became the first Mets starter to earn a win on his birthday since Dillon Gee in 2012.

Asked afterward if he enjoyed his day, Peterson grinned and said wryly: “Yeah. I did.”

The victory continued a standout run for Peterson, who is undefeated with a 1.81 ERA over his last seven starts. His 2.75 season ERA ranks ninth in the Majors among pitchers with at least 90 innings, while Peterson’s 9-1 record gives him the best winning percentage in MLB among those with at least 10 decisions. It’s also the best in Mets history among full-time starters with at least 10 decisions, eclipsing David Cone’s .870 winning percentage in 1988.

The key for Peterson on Tuesday was his four-seam fastball, which he used to great effect to whiff Rob Refsnyder, Tyler O’Neill and Rafael Devers in the first inning -- all on mid-90s pitches at the top of the strike zone. Peterson recorded multiple strikeouts in four of his first five innings, allowing his only run on a Nick Sogard single that fell in front of Brandon Nimmo in the fifth.

“I thought the four-seam today was really good,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “I thought that was the key. He was getting a lot of swing-and-misses, especially at the top of the zone.”

Now entrenched in the Mets’ rotation after missing the first two months of the season recovering from left hip surgery, Peterson has been arguably their most consistent pitcher in the second half.

As for his other birthday plans?

“The win’s good enough for me,” Peterson said. “I will take that. That’s a good enough present for me. Call the family and say good night, and that will top it off.”
