Mariners send Vogelbach to Blue Jays
SEATTLE – After a disappointing start to the season, designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach will look to get back on track in a new setting as the Mariners traded the burly 27-year-old to the Blue Jays on Sunday night.
Toronto acquired the 2019 American League All-Star in exchange for an undisclosed amount of cash. Vogelbach had been designated for assignment by the Mariners on Wednesday after hitting just .094 (5-for-53) with two homers and four RBIs in 18 games.
Vogelbach led the Mariners with 30 home runs in 2019 and was Seattle’s representative to the All-Star Game, but slumped badly in the second half and finished the season with a .208/.341/.439 slash line after batting .162 with nine homers in 59 games after the All-Star break.
Vogelbach was acquired by the Mariners from the Cubs on July 20, 2016, and posted a .196/.326/397 line with 36 home runs, 95 RBIs and 120 walks in 223 games from 2016-20 while splitting time at first base and designated hitter.
Vogelbach’s combination of patience at the plate and power potential made him an intriguing prospect, but his struggles continued this season and the rebuilding Mariners decided to part ways in order to give other players an opportunity to get at-bats in the DH spot.
