Cards stuff schedule with doubleheaders
Major League Baseball announced how the Cardinals will make up the seven postponed games from last week, and the new schedule involves five doubleheaders. All of the doubleheader games will be seven innings long.
The four-game home-and-home series with the Tigers, originally scheduled for this past Monday-Thursday, will be rescheduled as two doubleheaders: Aug. 13 at Comerica Park beginning at 12:10 p.m. CT and Sept. 10 at Busch Stadium beginning at 1:15 p.m. CT. Both days were previously scheduled as off-days for the Cardinals.
“I think the more we play baseball, the better,” Shildt said. “We look forward for the opportunity to play. There’s no doubt about that. This group will welcome it with open arms.”
The Field of Dreams game against the White Sox, originally scheduled for Aug. 13 in Dyersville, Iowa, will be moved to Aug. 14 at Guaranteed Rate Field beginning at 7:10 p.m. CT. It will be the first game in a three-game series in Chicago.
And the three-game series with the Brewers that was supposed to be played last weekend will be rescheduled as three doubleheaders during previously scheduled meetings between the teams later this season: Sept. 14 at Miller Park, Sept. 16 at Miller Park and Sept. 25 at Busch Stadium, where the Brewers will serve as the home team for Game 1.
Teams can have 29 players on their roster for doubleheaders, and taxi squads may increase from three to five.
Worth noting
• Kim, who replaces Carlos Martínez in the rotation, threw two simulation innings Thursday to prepare him for Monday’s start against the Pirates. His defense included Tommy Edman at shortstop and Brad Miller at third base. Harrison Bader hit a home run to end the workout, as the ball clanged in the right-center-field bleachers and Kim walked off the mound, grinning, with his hands in the air.
• Catcher Matt Wieters said he’s ready to play every day until Yadier Molina, who tested positive for COVID-19, is cleared to get back on the field. Wieters filled in when Molina went on the injured list last year and was effective for the Cardinals, which is why they brought the four-time All-Star back on a one-year deal.
“I was always ready to go fill in, but when they announced 60 games, you know that without unforeseen circumstances, Yadi was going to try and catch all 60 of those,” Wieters said. “But at the same time, it’s a crazy world we live in, you gotta be ready to go any time for a role that may be completely different than what you expected.
• The Cardinals announced that they’ll be selling cardboard cutout of fans to place in the stands in the coming days. More information will be available on how to purchase them soon.
