SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Nearly every team in baseball seems optimistic this time of year, but the D-backs have to be feeling particularly good about their situation.
Coming off a Wild Card berth in 2017, fan enthusiasm seems high -- which is reflected in increased season-ticket sales -- and the team appears primed for another run at the postseason.

Team president and CEO Derrick Hall addressed the media prior to Monday's first full-squad workout. Here are four takeaways:
Ownership is committed to winning
The D-backs right now have a little more than $125 million committed in payroll for this year, which easily tops the club record of $112 million for an Opening Day payroll. And they are likely not done adding to it.

"I don't think we're done by any means right now," Hall said. "[GM Mike Hazen] and his staff are looking at Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, Plan D. I would be surprised if we broke camp with the exact same roster and team that we have now. They do have so many different possibilities that they're looking at, be it trade or free agency."
The D-backs have learned lessons from going "all in" following playoff appearances in 2007 and '11 
Neither time were they able to make the postseason the following year and they sacrificed parts of their farm system in the process.
"It's definitely a competitive window for us," Hall said. "We know that. We've got guys who seem to be coming into their peak years. That plays a part. We know that it's a good time for us to win. We're a little more cautious I think than in the past, when we were just so overly anxious and excited and confident just to go all in."

Don't expect to hear about a Paul Goldschmidt extension right now
The first baseman is under contract for this season with a club option for next year, and it doesn't sound like there's been talk of an extension at this time. If there are future discussions, they won't be acknowledged publicly.
"The beautiful thing about Paul is he doesn't press the issue," Hall said. "He's a man of his word. It's not something that's of great concern to him. Being the unselfish and humble guy he is, he would rather us focus on the rest of the roster right now. If and when that day ever comes -- and you guys know [Hazen], he's not to talk about it, and Paul's not going to talk about it either -- we're just lucky to have a guy like Goldy."
