PHOENIX -- When the Padres scored two runs just two batters into Saturday night's game, it was clear that the D-backs were going to need to have their offense cranking.
Boy, did they ever.
The D-backs set a franchise record for runs as they smacked five home runs as part of an 18-hit attack to beat the Padres, 20-5, at Chase Field.
"I don't even know where to start," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "I just thought it was a collective effort. Everybody had quality at-bats throughout the course of the night. I thought we were patient very early off of [Padres starter Tyson] Ross. We kind of allowed him to make some mistakes in our zone. Just obviously was a really enjoyable night from an offensive standpoint."

Here's a partial look at some of the notable offensive accomplishments:
• The 20 runs eclipsed the previous franchise record, which was set May 17, 2014, when the D-backs beat the Dodgers, 18-7, at Chase Field.
• The D-backs have now scored 15 or more runs 21 times in franchise history.
• The D-backs scored five runs in the first, three in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth. That's the first time in franchise history they've scored three or more runs in four consecutive innings.
• David Peralta went 5-for-6 to match the team record for hits in a game.

• The 20 runs are tied for the most runs scored in a game this season, matching the Phillies' output against the Marlins on April 7.
After the Padres' two-run first, the D-backs responded in the bottom half of the inning with five runs off Ross (5-7).
Steven Souza Jr., Nick Ahmed, Paul Goldschmidt, Alex Avila and Ketel Marte each homered for the D-backs.

It was the first homer in a D-backs uniform for Souza, who has spent most of the year on the disabled list with a strained right pectoral muscle.
Meanwhile Avila, who was activated from the disabled list prior to the game, was 3-for-3, which combined with the 2-for-4 game he had before going on the DL, raised his season average from .109 to .148.
"My swing has felt good," Avila said. "It's just a matter of getting those hits and having quality at-bats. Obviously my first 100 ABs were not good, so just trying to slowly dig your way out of it."

With a win against the Padres on Sunday in the series finale, the D-backs would finish their 10-game homestand with a 4-6 mark. That might not sound impressive, but it certainly will feel good to them considering they started it 1-6.
"We're in position to kind of salvage a homestand," Lovullo said. "It didn't go the way we wanted it to, but we can't focus on what happened in the past. We just have to keep plowing ahead and moving forward."

RANDALL'S RETURN
Activated off the disabled list before the game, D-backs right-hander Randall Delgado made his first big league appearance since July 15, 2017, when he came on in the fifth in relief of Robbie Ray. Delgado, who got the win, was placed on the disabled list with an elbow issue last year, and then strained his left oblique this spring, which resulted in an extended stay on the DL.
"It was nice to see him throw the ball," Lovullo said. "He threw the ball well."
SOUND SMART
Goldschmidt has now hit 20 homers in a season six times, matching Luis Gonzalez for the D-backs' team record. Goldschmidt's homer Saturday was the 94th of his career at Chase Field, leaving him one shy of Gonzalez's Chase Field record.

YOU GOTTA SEE THIS
With runners at first and second and two outs in the fifth, Christian Villanueva hit a hard grounder down the left-field line. D-backs third baseman Jake Lamb dove to his right, got up quickly and threw to first to nail Villanueva. Avila did a nice job of catching the short hop throw while keeping his foot on the bag.

"That's impressive. You don't see that too often. It's one of those types of games that you enjoy it while it happens, but you forget about it quick because it's not something that happens all the time and you don't really expect that. With a day game tomorrow, it would be really easy to come out flat so you have to make sure tomorrow coming in we kind of keep the pedal down." -- Avila

The D-backs close out their four-game series with the Padres as well as their 10-game homestand on Sunday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. MST at Chase Field. Zack Greinke (9-5, 3.36 ERA) will get the start for the D-backs. The right-hander is riding a four-start winning streak, during which he's compiled a 1.73 ERA. In his career against the Padres, Greinke is 10-2 with a 2.07 ERA. Left-hander Clayton Richard (7-8, 4.46) will get the start for San Diego.
