D-backs hire Jeff Banister as bench coach
PHOENIX -- The D-backs' coaching staff continued to take shape Monday as the team announced the hiring of Jeff Banister to serve as manager Torey Lovullo's bench coach.
Banister will replace Luis Urueta, who had served as Lovullo's bench coach the previous two seasons, and will remain on the staff in some capacity.
One of the things Lovullo said he would be looking for in a bench coach was someone who "filled his gaps," whereas he and Urueta were very similar.
"I try to keep a very, very steady hand and pay attention to what's going on in front of me," Lovullo said. "And I sometimes get blinders on. I don't see outside of my own little space. So I think [Banister] does a good job of that, he does a good job of adding a little bit of spice a little bit of personality and seasoning."
Banister managed the Rangers from 2015-18, where he won two American League West titles while compiling a 325-313 (.509) record. He was named AL Manager of the Year in 2015.
Banister worked in a variety of positions in the Pittsburgh organization, managing for six seasons before becoming Clint Hurdle's bench coach from 2010-14.
"I love the intensity of the game," Banister said. "I love the energy of the game. I love watching players compete. I know that Torey, he thinks, he's pretty stoic about the game. I hope that I add some energy inside that coaching room, inside that clubhouse, that complements Torey and is completely infectious with the entire coaching staff. I hope I have the ability to carry his message throughout that clubhouse on a daily basis, give him a sounding board within the game. It's something that I did with Clint in Pittsburgh that worked very well."
The Pirates made the playoffs twice during Banister's time as Hurdle's bench coach and when Lovullo talked to Hurdle about Banister, he heard rave reviews.
"He was able to keep so many things off my desk," Hurdle said of Banister. "The best coach you can be is when you know when to take people to a manager's office, and you know when to just take care of the situation and let the manager kind of know what's going on. Because not everything needs to be the manager's responsibility. And not only was Jeff good at that, but he was also good at the cohesive building for the entire coaching staff on keeping them connected and keeping them working together and also integrating the other parts of that clubhouse. Whether it was equipment manager, whether it was the video guy, whether it was the strength and conditioning coach, he was able to keep it a very well-oiled machine."
Following his dismissal from the Rangers, Banister rejoined the Pirates as a special assistant in baseball operations, where he spent the past two seasons.
At the conclusion of the 2021 season in which they went 52-110, the D-backs made numerous changes to their coaching staff, with only bullpen coach Mike Fetters, first-base coach Dave McKay and third-base coach Tony Perezchica returning in their current roles.
This is the second coaching hire made by the D-backs this offseason, with the team having inked Joe Mather as hitting coach last week.
