PHOENIX -- The D-backs claimed left-hander Edwin Escobar off waivers from the Red Sox on Friday and optioned him to Triple-A Reno.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Escobar, the D-backs designated right-hander Matt Buschmann for assignment.
The D-backs have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Buschmann to the Minors. If the team wants to outright him, he will need to be placed on waivers. If a team claims him it will have to add him to its 40-man roster.
"For him, I hope a team picks him up and puts him in the big leagues because he did a great job for us," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "But we're hoping that he gets through [waivers]."
The move continued what has been an unfortunate two-week period for Buschmann. The 32-year-old spent 10 years in the Minor Leagues before getting called up by the D-backs earlier this month. In three appearances, he compiled a 2.08 ERA.
However, following the team's 14-inning game in San Diego during which starter Shelby Miller had to leave the game in the second inning, the team needed to get fresh arms from the Minor Leagues so Buschmann was optioned to Triple-A.
Escobar, 24, appeared in three games with Triple-A Pawtucket, including one start, and did not allow an earned run in seven innings.
