D-backs ink 20 picks to finalize 2023 Draft class
Below is a list of every player drafted by the D-backs.
Each club had until 5 p.m. ET/2 PT on Tuesday, July 25, to come to terms with its Draft selections. If a player had exhausted his collegiate eligibility, he could've signed at any time up until one week prior to the next year’s Draft.

Draft-and-follow picks -- high school and junior college players selected after the 10th round who attend a two-year college after the Draft -- can sign with their selecting teams for up to $250,000 up until a week prior to the following year’s Draft.
Players drafted from Round 11 on do not count against the bonus pools unless their signing bonus exceeds $150,000; any amount over that total will count against the pool.

1 (12): Tommy Troy, SS/3B, Stanford

Troy is a polished college hitter who has a good feel for the strike zone, has good bat-to-ball skills and can really impact the baseball. Troy spent most of this past season playing third base for Stanford, but he played shortstop there as well, and that’s where the D-backs plan to start him out. He agreed to terms July 17.
2 (48): Gino Groover, 3B, NC State
Pick value: $1,783,000
Signing bonus: $1,783,000
Groover’s calling card is his hit tool. He’s able to send line drives from foul pole to foul pole with good bat-to-ball skills. Groover was a fourth-year junior at North Carolina State, and although he has played different spots on the infield as well as the corner spots in the outfield, the D-backs believe he can stick at third base. He agreed to terms July 17.

Grice drew comparisons to slugger Joey Gallo for his frame and raw power, but the D-backs want the two-way player from Clemson to focus on pitching. He has a fastball that can reach 95 mph, a slider and a changeup. He agreed to terms July 18.
3 (80): Jack Hurley, OF, Virginia Tech

Hurley had been projected to go higher in the Draft, and the D-backs were pleased to get him where they did. He has excellent bat-to-ball skills, and last season he began to tap into his considerable raw power, so he could be an above-average hitter with above-average power at the next level. He agreed to terms July 17.
4 (112): Grayson Hitt, LHP, Alabama
Pick value: $597,500
Signing bonus: $1,200,000
Hitt had Tommy John this past spring, so he’s going to be out for a while, but the D-backs feel he has big stuff. His fastball operated in the 93-97 mph range with improved carry last fall before the injury. He agreed to terms July 17.

Pick value: $421,100
Signing bonus: $375,000
Sim’s father, Chong Soo Shim, was a star in the Korea Baseball Organization with the nickname “Hercules,” hitting more than 300 homers in his career. Shim relocated the family to San Diego when Kevin was 7. Sim agreed to terms July 17.

How bonus pools and pick values work
Each choice in the first 10 rounds comes with an assigned value, with the total for a club's selections equaling what it can spend in those rounds without incurring a penalty. If a player taken in the top 10 rounds doesn't sign, his pick's value gets subtracted from his team's pool. Clubs near the top of the Draft often spend less than the assigned value for those choices and use the savings to offer more money to later selections.
Teams that exceed their bonus pool face a penalty. Clubs that outspend their allotment by 0-5 percent pay a 75 percent tax on the overage. At higher thresholds, clubs lose future picks: a first-rounder and a 75 percent tax for surpassing their pool by more than 5 and up to 10 percent; a first- and a second-rounder and a 100 percent tax for more than 10 and up to 15 percent; and two first-rounders and a 100 percent tax for more than 15 percent.
