Fan tries to catch HR with cheesy nachos. You know how this ends
In the city famous for its cheesesteaks, when a home run was at stake, it was the cheese that told the story.
Corey Seager's eighth-inning solo homer at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday evening took a little bit longer to confirm because it landed in a plate of nachos -- and both the cheesy snack and the ball ended up back on the field of play. Even Seager wasn't sure what had happened at first, stopping at second base when he saw Phillies right-fielder Nick Castellanos pick up the ball and throw it in to the cutoff man.
The umpires initially ruled that the ball was live and in play, but upon review it became clear that it made direct contact with the nachos, which were being held by a Phillies fan beyond the right-field fence.
"All you gotta do is check the baseball. If there's cheese on it, it's gone," Rangers play-by-play man Dave Raymond joked while the umpires were conferring.
This is not the first time nachos have been a casualty at a baseball game. In 2021, a Dodgers fan ended up with far more cheese on his outfit than he ingested on this night, but at least he came away with the baseball. Sometimes you have to protect the nachos and still catch the ball, like this lucky guy.
Unfortunately for the Phillies fan, she secured neither her nachos nor the Seager home run, but she's still going home with a good story to tell. Because as far as we know, this is the first time in MLB history that a plate of cheesy chips has helped confirm a home run.
Then again, we're nacho sure we can confirm that.
