Dec. 11: Blue Jays considered favorites for Burnes (sources)
Thanks to Max Fried's reported eight-year, $218 million deal with the Yankees, Burnes is now in a tier of his own when it comes to free-agent starting pitchers. And sources have told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand that the Giants and the Blue Jays are expected to be the most aggressive pursuers of Burnes, with Toronto considered the favorite to land him.

The right-handed ace is poised to exceed Fried's price tag; two executives told Feinsand that Burnes could receive more than $240 million over eight years.

The Red Sox, another Fried suitor, were preparing an offer for Burnes on Tuesday afternoon, according to Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam of MassLive.com. However, sources told Feinsand that the Red Sox appeared "hesitant to spend what it will take to sign Burnes." Boston seems even more unlikely to meet Burnes' asking price after acquiring left-hander Garrett Crochet from the White Sox on Wednesday, though Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox are still in the mix for the right-hander.

The 30-year-old had a 2.92 ERA in 2024 with the Orioles. Burnes won the 2021 NL Cy Young with Milwaukee and has been a durable starter for the past four seasons, posting a 2.94 ERA in 125 starts in that time span.
