SAN FRANCISCO -- Infielder Conor Gillaspie, who was designated for assignment Thursday, cleared waivers Saturday and was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. He accepted the assignment, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
A postseason hero last year, Gillaspie remains a part of the San Francisco organization.
"Conor's done a lot for us. It's nice to have him down there," said Bochy, who was somber after briefing reporters about the team's move Thursday. "It gives us inventory, not that it's why we got him. He's down there available.
"He'll get some playing time. We'll see where he's at once he starts playing again."
Gillaspie slashed .163/.218/.288 for the Giants this season, down from his 2016 numbers: .262/.307/.440.
This season, he hit two homers -- both of which came in pinch-hit scenarios. He hit a ninth-inning blast against the Padres on July 21 and another in the eighth against the Dodgers on July 30.
"He's a pretty good pinch-hitter," Bochy said. "... I thought maybe somebody would take a chance on him."
Gillaspie will bolster Triple-A Sacramento's infield, which has seen its fair share of injuries and departures this season.
Belt's concussion appears mild
Bochy confirmed first baseman Brandon Belt was indeed diagnosed with a concussion, the fourth of his baseball career. Bochy indicated it will likely be a few days before the career Giant begins to feel better. But the Giants have been encouraged by seemingly more mild symptoms overall.
"He hasn't complained of any kind of vision problems," Bochy said.
Melancon could make rehab outing Tuesday
After three rehab outings, it appears as if closer Mark Melancon will need a few more before he's activated. Bochy said he could "possibly or potentially" throw on Tuesday at either Triple-A Sacramento or Class A Advanced San Jose. Sacramento is visiting Iowa on Tuesday, while San Jose is in Stockton.
