Everyone's fooled by the non-catch of the year
On Saturday, Indiana State’s Adam Pottinger made a fantastic catch to rob Iowa’s Brayden Frazier of a home run in the team’s Terre Haute Regional matchup in the College Baseball World Series.
On Sunday, Pottinger appeared to pull off another stunning home run robbery of Frazier … until he didn’t.
With the Sycamores leading, 11-7, in the bottom of the seventh inning, Frazier mashed a ball to deep left field that Pottinger seemed to once again rob for a home run.
And for a split-second, it looked like he had as he tracked the ball to the wall and leapt, with the camera angle making it seem like the ball was destined for his glove.
After coming back down, Pottinger lifted his glove in the air (a signature move for anyone who robs a home run) and began jogging toward the infield. But there was just one problem. The ball wasn’t in his glove. And one look on his face said it all.
After a couple more steps toward the infield, Pottinger came clean in the same sly way a child might come clean after stealing a piece of candy before dinner.
While all this was happening, Frazier had his back turned to the action, which allowed us to see some incredible reactions from his teammates who realized that the ball hadn’t been caught.
While the home run ended up counting, it still wasn’t enough for Iowa, as Indiana State picked up an 11-8 win to advance to the College Baseball World Series Super Regionals for the first time in program history.
And while that accomplishment means that the Sycamores will get a chance to finish the season at the top of the college baseball mountaintop, it also means that we have more chances to see Pottinger get into some home run robbery shenanigans, which is all we can ask for.
