Vanderbilt takes over top spot in College Baseball Hall of Fame Power Poll
LUBBOCK, Texas – The National College Baseball Hall of Fame Power Poll has a new No. 1 team for the third time in as many weeks as the Vanderbilt Commodores ascend to the peak for the Week 5 poll.
Fresh off a three-game sweep of Missouri in the Southeastern Conference lid-lifter for both teams, Vanderbilt received five of the possible six first place votes – the other first-place vote went to the Commodores’ in-state rival, the Tennessee Volunteers, who swept South Carolina to open SEC play. The Vols move into the No. 2 spot just six points behind Vanderbilt.
Preseason No. 1 Texas remains third while last week’s No. 1, Ole Miss, falls to No. 4 after a 2-2 week that saw the Rebels take two of three from Auburn. Virginia, which demolished Boston College in a three-game ACC set over the weekend to finish 5-0 on the week, is fifth.
Four new teams make their debut in the Power Poll this week. Old Dominion out of Conference USA checks in at No. 21 after a sweep of Middle Tennessee and a win over East Carolina. Texas State moves into the poll at No. 22 following a sweep of Arkansas State. Louisville, which took down previous No. 7 Notre Dame with a three-game ACC sweep and a 5-0 week, checks in at No. 23, while Maryland re-enters the poll at No. 24 after blasting Siena in three games.
