MIAMI -- There was good news and not so good news on the injury front on Monday for the D-backs' starting rotation. While Clay Buchholz is confident that his stay on the disabled list will be a short one, manager Torey Lovullo announced that Robbie Ray will return from the DL and start Wednesday.
Buchholz was removed from Sunday's game with a strained left oblique and placed on the DL prior to Arizona opening a four-game series at Marlins Park. To make room on the 40-man roster, the D-backs released right-hander Stefan Crichton, 26, who was acquired from the Orioles on April 2 for cash considerations.
"We just felt like with that left side injury and discomfort, it was the best thing for us to put him on the DL," Lovullo said. "We don't ever want to put a player in a situation where he's going to go out there less than 100 percent."
Buchholz has had issues with his side in the past but not quite like the injury he sustained on Sunday.
"This doesn't feel anything like the other times," Buchholz said. "Just take it a day at a time. Hopefully a couple days I'll come in, by day four it'll be good enough to get a ball in my hand and throw. I feel like I'll be able to jump right back in whenever this is up."

Buchholz had been on a roll prior to the injury. Only twice in seven starts this season had he allowed more than one run. He threw five scoreless innings at Pittsburgh before leaving the game with the injury. Over his last two starts, Buchholz had given up just one earned run in 10 2/3 innings, striking out eight.
The news is much better for Ray. The left-hander was scheduled to make a second rehab start on Monday but said he felt well enough to skip that and return to the team.

"We had a ton of options, we had a lot of things that we walked through over the past 24 hours after Clay's injury," Lovullo said. "We decided that Robbie is obviously ready for this challenge.
"He expressed that he was ready after the last rehab outing. We decided this is the right situation to pull him back and bring him on board on Wednesday to make a start."
Ray went on the 10-day DL on April 30 with a strained right oblique after leaving his April 29 start at Washington in the second inning. He is 2-0 with a 4.88 ERA in six starts this season, striking out 45 over 27 2/3 frames.
