Notes: Devenski wins 'pen job; Smith ready

March 29th, 2021

Non-roster invite was told Monday that he will be a part of the D-backs' Opening Day roster.

The right-hander, who was signed by the D-backs in January to a Minor League deal that will pay him $1 million while he is in the big leagues, did not allow a run in seven games (seven innings) this spring.

"He's had a terrific spring," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said.

As he talked to Devenski to give him the news Monday, Lovullo thought back to the Zoom call that he had with Devenski when he signed.

"He talked [then] about being ready," Lovullo said. "He talked about earning [a spot] and impressing us. And he went out and executed and did everything that he said he would do. So that stands up pretty tall for me, and it was a good conversation for all of us today."

Devenski be part of the back of the D-backs' bullpen along with Joakim Soria and Stefan Crichton.

"I told him that I'm not going to identify closer," Lovullo said. "I just don't feel the need to do that right now. And we're going to just have some back-end guys that we're going to match up and, and get through to win the game. And he's on board with it. He has been such a great guy. It's been great getting to know him and watch him go out with an incredible attitude of how he wants to compete each and every night."

Feeling good
Left-hander allowed seven runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings in his final spring tuneup on Monday in a 7-1 loss to the Cubs.

Smith struggled to put away hitters after jumping ahead in counts, and he wraps up the spring with an 8.57 ERA.

"I feel like I'm in a good spot," Smith said. "I've never thrown good in spring, but I feel like I'm in a good spot right now."

Smith's first regular-season start is scheduled for Saturday against the Padres at Petco Park.

"He was attacking the zone," Lovullo said. "The next step is to go ahead and finish off some hitters. But, look, you don't want to get banged around ever. I know that wasn't a great outing for him. So, you know, the next one will be hot, and I know he'll be in a better spot for it."

Injury updates
Lovullo said shortstop Nick Ahmed (right knee patella tendinitis) is still on track to be ready for Opening Day.

Meanwhile, outfielder Kole Calhoun (right knee surgery) has progressed quicker than expected and could return not long after the team returns from its seven-game road trip to open the season.

Up next
The D-backs wrap up the exhibition season on Tuesday afternoon when they take on the Indians at Chase Field at 12:40 p.m. MST. Right-hander Taylor Widener, who was recently named the No. 4 starter in the rotation, will get the start for the D-backs. Left-hander Alex Young, who earned a spot in the bullpen, is also scheduled to pitch.
