Wang designated for assignment by Royals
KANSAS CITY -- With left-hander Jason Vargas being activated to make the start on Saturday against the White Sox, the Royals adjusted their 40-man roster by designating veteran right-hander Chien-Ming Wang for assignment.
Wang had been on the 15-day disabled list since Aug. 31 with right biceps tendinitis before the Royals reinstated him and then made the DFA move. Wang appeared in 38 games this season, compiling a 6-0 record and a 4.22 ERA. He worked 53 1/3 innings out of the bullpen with 30 strikeouts and 18 walks. Opponents hit .286 against him.
Wang, who has been pitching in the Major Leagues since 2005, was signed by Kansas City as a Minor League free agent on Jan. 7, 2016. A former prominent starter for the Yankees, Wang finished second in American League Cy Young Award voting in 2006 when he was a 19-game winner.
