The Giants announced Wednesday that they’ve re-signed catcher Chadwick Tromp to a Major League deal, securing a reunion with the Aruban rookie one week after he was non-tendered by the club.

The agreement restored Tromp’s spot on the 40-man roster and put him back in the mix to open the 2021 season as Buster Posey’s backup. Top prospect Joey Bart is also on the catching depth chart, but the Giants have indicated that they could start the 23-year-old at Triple-A Sacramento to give him more time to develop.

Tromp, 25, spent his first seven professional seasons in the Reds' organization before signing a Minor League deal with the Giants last winter. He emerged as a standout during Summer Camp and earned an opportunity to stick on the Major League roster as the Giants’ No. 2 catcher. Tromp batted .213 with four home runs and 10 RBIs over 24 games and became the personal catcher for right-hander Johnny Cueto, who struggled to get on the same page with Bart.

The Giants could seek more catching depth this offseason, as president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has expressed a desire to add another veteran to the group. Tyler Heineman, who served as the Giants’ Opening Day catcher after Posey elected to sit out the 2020 season, departed as a free agent and signed a Minor League deal with the Cardinals, while Aramis Garcia was claimed off waivers by the Rangers.

San Francisco also announced that it has signed 11 players to Minor League deals with invitations to Major League Spring Training, including right-handers Melvin Adon and Rico Garcia, who were removed from the 40-man roster after being non-tendered last week. The list of non-roster invitees also featured right-handers Daniel Alvarez, Silvino Bracho, Dominic Leone, Yunior Marte, Raffi Vizcaíno and Sam Wolff; left-handers Anthony Banda and Sam Long; and infielder/outfielder Jason Krizan.
