NEW YORK -- Pirates right-hander Chad Kuhl was removed from Tuesday's 4-3, 10-inning loss to the Mets after four innings due to right forearm discomfort, and he underwent treatment by the medical staff at Citi Field. The Pirates were uncertain of the severity of his injury following the game.
"He threw a two-seam down and away and did something with his arm," said catcher Elias Diaz, "but I just thought it was normal because he always has a lot of energy on the mound. He said he felt something, but I don't know what happened after that."
Kuhl gave up three hits and two earned runs on the night, while tossing a career-high three wild pitches and walking two. There were two instances, once in the first inning and again in the fourth, during which pitching coach Ray Searage met with Kuhl on the mound. The second time, they were joined by Pirates trainers to look at his motion.
"We saw something from the dugout," said manager Clint Hurdle. "He thought he felt fine, and he threw a pitch, felt fine. And then he felt fine making the last pitch, but then I think he said after the last pitch walking off the mound, walking down to the dugout, he felt his right forearm tighten up."
Kuhl was not available for comment after the game.
