KANSAS CITY -- The Indians' starting lineup was back to full-strength when outfielder Tyler Naquin was plugged back into the nine-hole prior to Friday night’s 8-3 win over the Royals. He had missed the previous three games with hamstring tightness. But approximately one hour before the scheduled 8:15 p.m. ET first pitch, the Tribe had to sideline another bat.
Carlos Santana, who was expected to DH, was scratched from the lineup with left shoulder soreness after diving into first base on an infield single in the first inning of Thursday’s game. He’s considered day to day.
“Because we had a late arrival today, some of the medical stuff got done later,” manager Terry Francona said following Friday's win. “There’s a pretty decent chance he doesn’t play tomorrow. But he’s already doing much better.”
Santana was slated to hit third, but he was replaced in the order by Mike Freeman, who took over the third-base duties from Jose Ramirez. Ramirez shifted into the DH role and remained in his No. 5 spot in the lineup, hitting a big three-run homer and going 2-for-4. Freeman logged a pair of RBIs.
Rodriguez to throw first bullpen
Jefry Rodriguez has spent the last few weeks at the team’s spring facility in Goodyear, Ariz., rehabbing his right shoulder. He strained his throwing arm in his start on June 1 and he was expected to throw his first bullpen session on Friday.
