ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have reinstated catcher Carlos Perez from the disabled list and assigned him outright to Triple-A Round Rock.
Perez had been on the disabled list since June 16 with a right ankle sprain. The move means Texas is staying with Isiah Kiner-Falefa as its backup catcher behind Robinson Chirinos.
The Rangers also announced that outfielder Austin Jackson has cleared release waivers and become a free agent. He was acquired on July 8 in a trade with the Giants as the Rangers agreed to assume his contract while acquiring reliever Cory Gearrin and Minor League pitcher Jason Bahr.
In addition, Texas has taken pitcher Joe Palumbo off the 60-day disabled list and assigned him to Class A Advanced Down East. He has been sidelined for 15 months while recovering from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery.
Palumbo replaces left-hander Yohander Mendez, who has been promoted to Double-A Frisco. Mendez was 1-2 with a 3.48 ERA in five starts at Down East after being optioned there from the big leagues on June 19.
