Correa sits with back tightness, expected back soon
MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins shortstop Carlos Correa sat for a second consecutive game on Monday with middle back tightness that arose as the result of an awkward play at home plate during Minnesota’s 9-6 victory over the Astros on Saturday.
Both Correa and manager Rocco Baldelli expressed that the issue is expected to resolve quickly, as Correa said that his condition had noticeably improved by Monday. The shortstop said that he should be back within “a couple days,” and possibly as soon as Tuesday, depending on how he responds to treatment.
Notably, Correa said that this round of back tightness doesn’t appear related to the back issues that sent him to the injured list for chunks during the 2018 and ‘19 seasons while he was with the Astros.
“My problems in the past were more lower back,” Correa said. “There’s nothing there right now. It’s just like a spasm. Nothing to worry about. Just some treatment and some rest and it should be good.”
“Initially, when he was off yesterday, in my mind, it was a one- or two-day thing,” Baldelli said.
Correa attempted to score from second base on Trevor Larnach’s RBI single in the second inning of Saturday’s game, but the throw home from Houston center fielder Jake Meyers beat him by plenty and Correa had to hit the brakes and try to pirouette around the tag of catcher Martín Maldonado.
Correa said he played the remainder of the game through discomfort and woke up sore on Sunday, when he sat for the series finale against the Astros. He’s off to a slow start at the plate this season, hitting .182/.250/.242 with 10 strikeouts in 36 plate appearances.
“I should be good in a couple days, but want to make sure that I don’t play through it and it gets worse,” Correa said. “It shouldn't be anything too alarming.”
In Correa’s absence, the Twins fielded a very shorthanded bench on Monday against the White Sox, as Joey Gallo remained day-to-day with right side soreness and Byron Buxton was still being held out of playing the field. Gallo was expected to try out “rotational movement” on Monday, per Baldelli, and is still thought to need a few more days before returning to the field.
