Carrasco throws successful BP; Davis in OF?

July 10th, 2021

NEW YORK -- Mets right-hander , who is on the 60-day injured list because of a right hamstring strain, threw batting practice on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field.

Carrasco threw two innings from the stretch and 29 pitches overall without any problems. The fastball was impressive and jumped out of his hand. It was clocked in the mid-90s, according to manager Luis Rojas. The changeup that Carrasco is known for looked like his fastball, but it dove significantly.

Carrasco may throw another batting practice session or start a rehab assignment for Triple-A Syracuse, and he may pitch two to three innings.

“He is a veteran pitcher. At this point nobody knows better than him as far as where his arm is,” Rojas said prior to Saturday's doubleheader against the Pirates. “That’s a conversation with the performance staff because the strength in his hamstring plays a big factor here. [The hamstring] is where we want it to be. After today, we’ll see what the next step is.”

Carrasco has yet to pitch an inning after joining the Mets, along with shortstop Francisco Lindor, in an offseason trade that sent four players, including shortstop Amed Rosario, to Cleveland.

No guarantees for Davis

Mets infielder J.D. Davis, who is on the 60-day IL with a left hand sprain, may return after the All-Star break when the Mets are slated to open the second half against the Pirates starting on Friday at PNC Park. However, Rojas would not commit to Davis returning as the everyday third baseman.

The club has been getting production from Jonathan Villar and Luis Guillorme at the hot corner. Davis could see time in the outfield once he returns to action.

“[Davis] will be a third baseman. He will get a chance to play third. We tried him at first. We think of his versatility. He has played the outfield before,” Rojas said. “I think moving around will serve well for him. You always want to have J.D.’s bat in the lineup. He’s a good hitter, but I can’t say right now he is the third baseman.

“I feel everyone we have here is that everyday player. Everyone is getting a chance to play. We are rotating. J.D. is going to come in and be a part of that rotation.”

Moving on up

Third baseman Brett Baty, the Mets' No. 4 prospect, was promoted from High-A Brooklyn to Double-A Binghamton, the team announced on Saturday. He will report to Binghamton after he and Brooklyn teammate Francisco Álvarez represent the Mets at Sunday's SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.

Baty, whom the Mets picked 12th overall in the 2019 MLB Draft, hit .309 with 14 doubles, seven homers, 27 runs scored and 34 RBIs in 51 games for Brooklyn.

Worth noting

There is talk that ace Jacob deGrom may pitch in Sunday's series finale against the Pirates, but Rojas said the team is leaning toward not having him pitch on short rest. The right-hander last pitched on Wednesday and threw seven innings with 10 strikeouts against the Brewers.

“We are leaning towards probably not having him throw until the second half right now. That’s what’s in our mind,” Rojas said. “We can have a conversation just to see how he feels about tomorrow.”
